published 1708Etching and engraving; printed on paper; manuscript yellow colouring to field trenches | Scale: 1:9,000 approx. | RCIN 723132
A map of Tournai, showing the approach works of the French siege, commanded by Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne vicomte de Turenne (1611-75), which lasted from 21 June 1667 until the town surrendered on 25 June. Oriented with north-east to top (compass rose). War of Devolution (1667-8).
Following its capture by the French in 1667, the fortifications of Tournai were strengthened by Vauban. Bailleu published this retrospective map just a few months before the fortress was again besieged, during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14), by Marlborough and Eugene of Savoy in 1709.
A close copy of Baillieu's map, without the military details, and without reference to the 1667 siege, was published in Amsterdam about 1720 by Pierre Mortier.
