A view of Barcelona, defended by Catalan rebels and the French under the viceroy of Catalonia, Phillippe de la Motte-Houdancourt (1605-57) and John Gaspar Ferdinand de Marchin [or Marsin], comte de Granville (1601-73) and besieged between July 1651 and October 1652 by Spanish forces commanded by Don Juan de Austria (the Younger) (1629-79), resulting in the capitulation of the city on 13 October 1652. Catalan Revolt (1640-59). Oriented with west-north-west to top (compass rose indicates north-west to top).
The compass rose on this view appears to show that north-west (Maestro) is to top and, correspondingly, south-east (Scirroco) is to the bottom. However, west (Ponente) and east (Levante) are in their conventional positions for a north-pointing compass.
The title is top centre, in a banderole, to each side of the coat of arms of the dedicatee, Cardinal Gian Giacomo Teodoro Trivulzio (1597-3 August 1656).
Horatio Marinari (active 1634-56) (publisher) [bottom right, below key, in cartouche:] Oratio Marinari D.D.D. / Roma com licenza di superiori 1652
