1784

Etching and engraving; printed on paper | 41.6 x 66.5 cm (image) | RCIN 734102.1.a

A perspective view looking south-west towards Algiers showing the combined attack of the second bombardment of Algiers by the Spanish, Two Sicilies, Portugal and Malta, on the Regency of Algiers. Spanish-Barbary Conflicts (1694-1784).

Although the title claims that the bombardment took place in August 1784, it actually happened between 12 and 21 July 1784. The action led to the capitulation of the Dey of Algiers, ending Barbary piracy in the Mediterranean until the Napoleonic Wars.
