A view of the naval Battle of Scheveningen (aka Battle of Texel or Battle of Ter Heijde) fought on 10 August 1653 [N.S.] between the Commonwealth of England, commanded by General at Sea George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle (1608-70) and the United Provinces commanded by Admiral Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp (1598-1653) who was killed during the battle which resulted in heavy losses to both sides, both of whom claimed victory. First Anglo-Dutch War (1652-4).
The Dutch coastline is shown stretching from Texel (53°05ʹ00ʺN 04°50ʹ00ʺE) in the north (from where the English fleet sighted Tromp's ships on 8 August) to Scheveningen in the south, with the cities of Leÿden (Leiden 52°09ʹ30ʺN 04°29ʹ35ʺE) and s' Gravenhage (The Hague 52°04ʹ36ʺN 04°17ʹ55Eʺ) in the background. Admiral Tromp's ship Brederode is marked 'A' in the left foreground. Tromp was killed by a sharp shooter in the rigging of William Penn's (Admiral of the White) ship The James.
