FRANÇOIS COLLIGNON (C.1610-87)

A map of Candia, 1668 (Heraklion [Candia, Irákleion], Crete, Greece) 35°19ʹ40ʺN 25°08ʹ36ʺE

published 1669

Etching and engraving; printed on paper | Scale: no scale. About 1:5,000. | RCIN 723140

A map of the Venetian fortress of Candia, showing the position of the Venetian defences and the Ottoman attacks on 12 September 1669 in the final days of the long Ottoman siege, begun in 1648 and continuing until the city capitulated on 27 September 1669. Map oriented with south to top (compass rose). Fifth Ottoman-Venetian War or Cretan War (1645-69).

This map is a revised edition of an earlier map by François Collignon which showed the positions as of 29 September 1668 (in the Bibliothèque nationale de France [last accessed 2 December 2017]), or, possibly, of an intermediate edition. New defensive lines within the city are shown and there appears to be an attempt, common to both editions, to indicate those structures which were destroyed during the bombardments perhaps by showing them in darker stippling. There has been considerable re-engraving of the plate.
