BATAILLE DE S.T DENIS. / PRES DE MONS 4/14 Aoust 1678

1678 or later

Etching and engraving; printed from two copperplates on two sheets of paper, joined; formerly mounted on paper and guarded for insertion into a volume | 55.0 x 83.6 cm (image and neatline) | RCIN 724016

A view of the Battle of St Denis, or Battle of Casteau, fought on 14-15 August 1678 between the French, commanded by François-Henri de Montmorency, duc de Luxembourg (1628-95) and the Dutch, commanded by William III of Orange (later William III of England and Ireland and William II of Scotland; 1650-1702), resulting in a strategic victory for the Dutch. Franco-Dutch War (1672-8).

The mounted figure in the left foreground is William of Orange whose horse blanket bears his coat of arms. To his right is James Scott, Duke of Monmouth. To the right, the mounted figure third from the right edge of the print is Carlos de Aragón de Gurrea y de Borja, 9th Duke of Villahermosa. In the centre distant background stands the fortified city of Mons with the French lines and encampment in front of it; right of centre, in the middle foreground is the Abbey of St Denis where a mortar bomb has just exploded in the courtyard.

A reduced copy of this engraving was made by Jan Luyken (1649-1712). Entitled ‘Feld-Schlacht bey Bergen [Mons] in Henegouen’, it was published as an illustration in P. Valckenier, Das verwirrte Europa, Amsterdam, 1677-83. (see Rijksmuseum: RP-P-OB-82.487). The key to the reduced engraving is in German.
