Two views of the Dutch raid on the Medway, commanded by Admiral Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter (1607-76) in which the British fleet lying at Gillingham and Chatham was substantially destroyed. Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665-7).
These two views were etched by Romeyn de Hooghe after paintings by the Dutch artist Willem Schellinks who based his views on the drawings and sketches he made while he was touring England between 1661 and 1663. One of these paintings is entitled Het verbranden van de Engelse vloot bij Chatham, juni 1667, tijdens de Tweede Engelse Zeeoorlog (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam acc. no. SK-A-1393 [last accessed 2 December 2017]).
According to Landwehr (p.15), these views of the Medway raid are the first of de Hooghe's 'Newsprints'.
