A portrait of Charles I together with four plans of the encampments of the English army on the route of his march towards Scotland between Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Berwick-upon-Tweed in May 1639. First Bishops' War (1639).
The publisher of this print, Thomas Sandford, was a quartermaster who served in 1640 as quartermaster in the Earl of Northumberland's Regiment of Foot (the Lord General's Regiment) during the army's retreat from Newcastle to York in the Second Bishops' War of 1640 (see the Rushworth Papers for confirmation).
The map of the 'Great Leaguer', which is referred to in the Gossick moore plan above, was the encampment near Berwick, shown in RCIN 722137.
