FRANÇOIS COLLIGNON (C.1610-87)

Map of the siege of Szczecin, 1677 (Szczecin, West Pomeranian Voivodship, Poland) 53°25ʹ44ʺN 14°33ʹ10ʺE

1677 or later

Etching with engraving; printed on paper; reverse-window mounted (Mount Type B) on paper; gilt to top edge | Scale: not stated. Not to scale. | RCIN 724014

A map of the siege of Szczecin (Stettin) carried out between July and December 1677 by German forces, commanded by Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg (1620-88), resulting in the capitulation of the city. Scanian or Swedish-Brandenburg War (1675-9). Oriented with east to top.

At the bottom (west) of the map are the lines of circumvallation which run around the west side of the fortified city of Szczecin and past a star fort occupied by the Swedes. The line runs into the Brandenburg camp with its irregularly shaped fortified walls. From the south side of the camp a road runs towards a pontoon bridge which is fortified by three square redoubts. On the eastern side of the River Odara (Odra) a symbol depicts a sturdily built road made of wood and trees to enable the army to pass over the marshland (Palludi). The rivers running across the top (east) of the map are the great and small ‘Reglitze’ (Regalica).
