JEAN-BAPTISTE JACQUES DE BEAURAIN (1728-C. 1785)

Rhine, 1674-5

5.e P[lanche]

c.1782

Etching and engraving; printed from two copperplates on two pieces of paper, joined | Scale: 1:88,000 approx. | RCIN 724008.e

A map of the Rhine (one of six sheets) showing the campaigns of the French and German armies in 1674 and 1675. Franco-Dutch War (1672-8). Oriented with north to top. For the other five sheets, see RCINs 724008.a-d, f.

The medallion which appears, top right, refers to the success of Marshal Turenne in 1674. A man dressed in Roman military costume holds the standard of France and pursues his enemies; he leaves behind him an aquatic god which represents the River Neckar. The legend reads: the Germans flee for the second time beyond the Neckar (in Latin: Germanis Iterum Fusis ad Nicrum). (Beaurain, 1782, p.viii.).

The sheet extends from Walheim (Walheim, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany 49°43ʹ04ʺN 08°06ʹ22ʺE) in the top left corner to Eberstadt (Eberstadt, Baden-Württemberg, Germany 49°28ʹ38ʺN 09°22ʹ01ʺE) in the top right corner, and from Helmstein (Elmstein, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany 49°22ʹ00ʺN 07°56ʹ00ʺE) in the bottom left corner to Walhem (Walheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany 49°00ʹ51ʺN 09°09ʹ04ʺE) in the bottom right corner.
