ABRAHAM BOSSE (1604-76)

Siege of Pouzin, 1628

PLAN du siege du POUZIN / en Viuaretz assiegee et rendue en lobeis: / sense du Roy le [blank space] mil [blank space]

1628 or later

Etching and engraving; printed on paper; mounted on paper (Mount Type B); gilt edges left and bottom | 38.0 x 55.5 cm (image and sheet) | RCIN 722046

A middle to high oblique view of Protestant-held Pouzin, besieged 25 May-3 June 1628, by Henri II de Montmorency (1595-30 October 1632), Governor of Languedoc, resulting in the capture of the town on 3 June 1628. Huguenot Rebellions or Rohan Wars (1627-1629). Oriented with west to top (cardinal points).

There is no accompanying text to explain the letters on the view. Another impression of this view in the Bibliothèque nationale de France has the missing dates in the title supplied in ink: 'le 3 juin mil six cens vint huit.' What appears to be a loose copy of this view, lacking all lettering and the cardinal point which is engraved in the river, is published in Les Triomphes de Louis le Juste, XIII (1649), following a brief note of the action on p.57. The date of 1629, given in the old catalogue, appears to be an error.

The attribution of the print to Beins and Bosse is made by François de Dainville p.72, who says: 'Ce plan anonyme, non daté, gravé par Abr. Bosse, a certainement été dessiné par J. de Beins.'

Another example of this print is at RCIN 722039.c.
