? DANIEL PATERSON (D. 1749)

Order of battle at Culloden, 1746 (Culloden Moor, Highland Region, Scotland, UK) 57°28'00"N 04°05'00"W

c.1746

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | 37.0 x 23.1 cm (image) | RCIN 730017

An order of battle and order of march of the royalist army of George II, commanded by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-65) on the way to Culloden Moor on 16 April 1746. Jacobite Rebellion (1745-6).

The order of march is given in three columns, each comprising five named regiments. A note, bottom right, in the same hand as the rest of the document, reads: ‘NB Howards Regiment not mentioned or Wolfs to be / moved upon the Flanks as the Situation may / require’. In fact, Wolf's regiment is placed in the second line under Maj. Gen. Huske's, whose name is written in in pencil in another hand.

The army is placed in three lines of six, five and three regiments, with a group of three squadrons to each side of the front line and one squadron (Kingston's Horse) at each end of the third line. The Duke's name does not appear. Two pieces of field artillery are shown between the each of the battalions on the first line; two groups of three mortars are shown in the second line, one between Ligonier's and Wolf's and the other between Fleming's and Bligh's.

It is apparent, from the order of march, that the manoeuvre into order of battle while on the move was for each unit in the second line of each column to move forwards to the left of the unit in front; this was repeated for the third and fourth lines. The rear units formed the reserve.

This order of battle is in a standard Board of Ordnance hand, very similar to that of Daniel Paterson. Unfinished; lacks final colouring of regimental rectangles.

Additional text: [bottom right, a note reads:] NB Howards Regiment not mentioned or Wolfs to be / moved upon the Flanks as the Situation may / require.
