Map of Culloden, 1746 (Culloden Moor, Highland Region, Scotland, UK) 57°28'00"N 04°05'00"W
c.1746Pencil, ink, brown and black ink, and grey wash on paper; laid down on linen | Scale: 1:11,500 approx. | RCIN 730023
This map shows that the Royal army first formed in order of battle some distance to the east of the final position and then moved westwards. The order of battle, as it appears on this map, differs from the standard orders (see RCIN 730017 et seq.) in that the front line is composed of seven, not six regiments, and the second of six, not five, while the third line comprises only two regiments. Five squadrons of horse are on the left flank and three on the right. The regimental rectangles are shown correctly with the thickened line facing front. The arrangement of the rebel army is generalised with the plaid being represented in the rectangular fill by dots. The position of the rebel army is usually shown, on other plans, as abutting close to the south-east corner of the grounds of Culloden House; here they are represented some distance away.
Another plan of the battle by Daniel Paterson, entitled ‘A Plan of the Battle of Coullodin Moore’ is in NLS in the Board of Ordnance plans at MS. 1648 Z.03/30a. This shows slightly different details to RCIN 730023 and, in particular, shows the more conventional position for the left wing of the rebel army, abutting the corner of the walls of Culloden Park. This map is described in detail in Pollard 2009, pp.176-8.
