? WILLIAM EYRES (D. 1764)

Map of the Battle of Culloden, 1746 (Culloden Moor, Highland Region, Scotland, UK) 57°28'00"N 04°05'00"W

c.1746

Pencil, pen, ink, watercolour and grey wash on eight sheets of paper, joined; laid down on linen | Scale: 1:8,400 approx. | RCIN 730024

A map of the Battle of Culloden fought on 16 April 1746 between the King’s army, commanded by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-65) and the Jacobite army, under Charles Edward Stuart (1720-88) resulting in a royal victory. Jacobite Rebellion (1745-6). Oriented with south-west to top (compass rose indicates north-north-east to top).

The tentative attribution to William Eyres is made on stylistic grounds. This large-scale plan is the only one in the collection on which some attempt has been made to portray the microtopography of the battlefield, with many pools of open water, and rough ground, which are contrasted with the cultivated fields within the Culwhiniac enclosures. None of the regiments of either army is named, and the left flank of the rebel army is shown further north along the east wall of the Culloden Parks than other maps.
