Order of battle, 1745, England

1745 or later

Pencil, pen and ink on thin paper | 19.2 x 31.5 cm (image) | RCIN 730008

An order of battle of the British, Dutch and Swiss troops under the command of Field Marshal Wade in 1745. Jacobite Rebellion (1745-6).

Unfinished; regimental rectangles are uncoloured; pencil guiding lines for the lettering are visible. This small force of six squadrons and 16 battalions, with artillery and two battalions in Reserve, was commanded by Wade with, in the First Line, General Nassau; Lieutenant-Generals Swartzenberg and Tyrawley; Major-Generals Oglethorpe and Howard; Brigadiers Evertseen and Mordaunt.

The General Officers of the Second Line are Lieutenant-General Wentworth; Major-Generals Villattes and Huske; Brigadiers Grotenray and Cholmondeley. The Reserve Corps is commanded by Colonel Patot.

This order of battle is dated 1746 but probably refers to the forces which Wade had under his command when pursuing Prince Charles Edward Stuart in Britain at the end of 1745. Wade refused a further appointment for service at the end of 1745 on the grounds of his age (he was 72) and his ill health (Speck 1981, pp.104-5).
