Siege of Gibraltar, 1727

GIBRALTAR / A PLAN OF THE ENEMY’S APPROACHES

1727 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper; laid down on coarse linen | Scale: 1:4,800 approx. | RCIN 727024

A map of the siege of Gibraltar, 11 February-12 June 1727, by the Spanish, commanded by Cristóbal de Moscoso y Montemayor, against the British garrison who were supported by the navy, commanded by Admiral Sir Charles Wager (1666-1743). The Spanish withdrew from the siege. Anglo-Spanish War (1727-9). Oriented with east to top.

This map shows the Spanish trenches and assaults on the north side of the fortifications; lines of fire from the Spanish and British batteries are drawn. The heavy brush strokes which are used to depict the vertiginous sides of the Rock are typical of British Board of Ordnance draughting style which is very similar to that used by Paul Sandby (bap.1731-1809) for his depiction of the mountains on the Survey of Scotland (1727-55).
