VIENNA / LIBERATA / dalle Armi Christiani [and, within the walls of Vienna:] Citta di VIENNA assediata / dal Turco a.o 1683 nel mese di luglio / alli 13

1683 or later

Etching and engraving; printed from two copperplates on one sheet of paper; gilt edges right and bottom | Scale: not stated. Not to scale | RCIN 724022

A medium oblique view/map of the siege of Vienna, 14 July-12 September 1683, by the Ottoman army, commanded by Grand Vizir Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha (1634/5-1683) which culminated in a victory for the Holy League (Poland, Holy Roman Empire), commanded by Jan III Sobieski, King of Poland following the Battle of Vienna on 11-12 September 1683. Great Turkish War (1683-99), Ottoman-Habsburg Wars (1526-1791), Polish-Ottoman War (1683-99). Oriented with north to top (cardinal points).

The map is headed by the portraits of the three victorious Holy League commanders, left to right: Jan III Sobieski, King of Poland (1629-96); Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor (1640-1705); Charles V, Duke of Lorraine (1643-90).

The untitled view, which is engraved on a separate copperplate but printed on the same sheet of paper as the map, shows the Allied army routing the Turks who are shown retreating, leaving all their baggage, weapons, and ammunition and tents, etc., abandoned.

Both the map and the view are printed from re-worked copperplates which, originally, possibly showed a different stage in the siege of Vienna. Imperfectly erased lettering is conspicuous in the centre of Vienna and appears all over the face of the map and in the bottom half of the view.
