The Seven Years War (1756-63)

Manuscript and printed maps and views, correspondence and journals from the first global war

? WILLIAM ROY (1726-90)

Map of Cancale and Saint-Malo, 1758 (Cancale, Brittany, France) 48°40'33"N 01°51'08"W; (Saint-Malo, Brittany, France) 48°39'00"N 02°01'00"W

c.1758

Pen, ink and watercolour on two pieces of thin paper, joined | Scale: 1:23,000 approx. | RCIN 732055.c

A map of the coast and inland area of Brittany between St Malo and Cancale, 1758. Seven Years War (1756-63). Oriented with north to top (cardinal points).

This map shows the same military detail as RCINs 732055.a and b, but differs in the way that the topographical detail is rendered. It is probable that both maps are stylised representations of fields, woods, orchards and cultivated land.

An entry for a 'drawn plan on thin paper' of 'St. Malos & part of the coast of Britagne' appears in the listing of Lieutenant-General Robert Napier's maps (RA Cumberland Papers Vol. 6/12), but it is not possible to identify, with certainty, this map with that entry. Napier (c.1703-66), was Adjutant General and Secretary for Military Affairs to the Duke of Cumberland.

Condition: one fold line; brown discolouration.
