The actions portrayed on this map lasted from 16 January to 4 February when the French capitulated and the island of Martinique had surrendered. The British were commanded by Major-General Robert Monckton (1726-82; Governor and Commander in Chief of New York Province) and Rear-Admiral George Rodney (bap.1718-92). The French were under the orders of Francis V of Beauharnais (1714-1800). The British retained control of the island until the end of the war and then returned it, together with Guadeloupe, to the French.
Condition: six fold lines; creased; very worn and torn; some old repairs to tears; heavy surface dirt along left and right edges. Verso: ink splashes; induced discolouration; heavy surface dirt along left edge. The old repairs on the verso have been made with strips of white paper; on one of these is the date 1789; this is consistent with what we know about the dates of cataloguing and organisation of the collection. The dated paper looks as if it was scrap.
