This map of Gabarus Bay shows landings and positions of the fleet for both 1745 and 1758; army commanders are named. The surveyor, Richard Gridley was a Provincial colonel in 1758 and was engineer to the Louisbourg expedition. In 1757, when the venture was being planned, John Cleveland, Secretary to the Admiralty, had the use of the land survey by Gridley and Captain John Bastide. Gridley was a volunteer at Louisbourg in 1758. In 1775 he was a Massachusetts Major-General, supervising the works on Breed's Hill at Boston. He was wounded at the Battle of Bunker Hill.
