The original painting by Richard Paton was executed about 1760 and is currently in a private collection. The painting is illustrated on the dust jacket of The capture of Louisbourg 1758 by Hugh Boscawen, University of Oaklahoma Press, 2011.
Additional text: [bottom left:] Cap.n Laforey with 25 Boats Attack'd / and took the Prudent of 74 Guns, but / finding her aground, was obliged / to burn her. [Bottom right:] Capt.n Balfour with 25 Boats Attack'd / Took, and Towed off the Bienfaisant of / 64 Guns into the N.E. Harbour, the in / possession of the British Troops.
Condition: one fold line; creased; left edge torn; surface dirt and brown both sides.
