HUGH DEBBIEG (1731-1810)

Map of encampment at Montmorency, 1759 (Boischatel, Quebec, Canada 46°53'39"N 71°08'41"W

c.1759

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper; laid down on linen | Scale: 1:4,800 | RCIN 732104

A map of the encampment at Montmorency, 8 July 1759. French and Indian War (1754-63). Oriented with north-west to top (cardinal points).

The style of cartography is very similar to that practised by the draughtsmen, including Hugh Debbieg, on the Military Survey of Scotland (1747-55), but the lettering, and the rendering of the vegetation and relief appears to be in Mackellar's hand. This map formed part of the compilation materials for RCIN 732100. This encampment site is now covered by the town of Boischatel and the outline of the square redoubt overlooking the Falls can still be seen today.
