The Seven Years War (1756-63)

Manuscript and printed maps and views, correspondence and journals from the first global war

WILLIAM ROY (1726-90)

Map of Germany, 1760

1760 or later

Pen, ink and watercolour on four sheets of paper, joined; laid down on linen and edged in white silk | Scale: 1:60,300 approx. | RCIN 733015.a

A map of the encampment and movements of the Allied army, together with the manoeuvres of the French army, in Germany from 10 July to 24 September 1760. Seven Years War (1756-63).

Oriented with north to top. Three different sets of troop and camp positions in the vicinity of Warburg (51°29'24"N 09°08'47"E) are drawn on three separate flaps (RCINs 733015.b-d) which were formerly pasted to the base map but which are now removed and preserved separately. Roy probably used information taken from printed maps of the area combined with original survey. He has marked the 'Meridian of the Weidelsberg' and the 'Parallel of Cassel & the Weidelsberg'. The identity of the regiments is indicated by numbers which refer to the accompanying journal at RCIN 733015.e.
