Maps of Germany, Europe and North America, 1756-63
1765Engraving; printed on paper; some maps are hand-coloured; in full brown leather binding | 23.3 x 17.5 cm (pages) (page dimensions) | RCIN 731066
A collection of 67 small maps of actions in Germany during the Seven Years War, 1756-63. Seven Years War (1756-63). The general map which appears at the head of the volume advertises that the actions and events of the war were represented in 74 maps. An undated note in pencil on the verso of the first blank folio of another copy of this work (RCIN 1080056.a), which also comprises only 67 maps and the general map, reads: ‘This appears to be the Beaurain Map of Germany – with all the plans etc which surrounded it – taken off & made into a volume.’
The title of the general map suggests that it was indeed originally surrounded by 74 small plans. If that was so, in order for them to be fitted round the general plan of Germany, they would have to have been cut down to the border, and then mounted, without the text, in a double row around the main map. The small plans in this volume all follow a similar format with the explanatory text at the bottom, or to the right side of the map. The position of the text for each map is indicated in the list of contents, below, by the lower case 'b' or 'r' in square brackets after the short title and date.
The maps are hand coloured to show the Allied army in red and the French army in blue. The maps are catalogued separately.
The volume has a full brown leather binding; upper and lower boards edged with three gold lines; the cipher of George III is stamped in gold in the centre of both boards. Spine with five ridges, decorated with a floral emblem in gold; two leather title labels, now mainly missing, with the gold letters ‘GU’ remaining [GUERRE DE SEPT ANS 1755 -1763]. Marbled end papers; red staining to edges of pages; three blank pages at the end. The maps are trimmed to the edge of the outer border and are reverse window mounted onto the page.
