Order of battle, 1756, British and Hanoverian troops; London (Greater London, England, UK) 51°30'30"N 00°07'32"W
1756 or laterInk and red watercolour on two sheets of paper | 23.7 x 41.8 cm (neatline) | RCIN 731084.a
The draughtsmanship of this order of battle is typical of the Board of Ordnance style as exemplified by Thomas Sandby or William Roy. The second sheet of the order of battle, (RCIN 731084.b), has no title and appears to be a rendering of the Second Line and Reserve in a slightly different order with the addition of Maj. Gen. Oberg as one of the commanding officers. It was formerly contained in a rough buff rag paper folder on which is written the old heading and MS numbers and, in a modern hand: a + b CMB Nov'[19]86.
This order of battle of British and Hanoverian troops, according to the old catalogue entry, was designed to be used for the force which was to be stationed near London, presumably to defend the capitol against the expected French invasion.
The General Officers of the First Line are Generals Sommerfeldt and Ligonier; Lieutenant-Generals Hawley, Sporcken, Duke of Marlborrough; Major-Generals Kellmansegge, Sackville.
The General Officers of the Second Line are Lieutenant-Generals Delaware and Campbell, and Major-General Ancram. The Reserve is commanded by Major-General Oberg.
