A view of the British attack on Roseau, 6 June 1761. Seven Years War (1756-63).

The British combined operations expedition to Dominica in June 1761 was led by Col. Andrew Rollo, 5th Lord Rollo (1703-65; Brigadier-General in America) who was in command of 26,000 troops, and Commodore Sir James Douglas (1703-87; later Admiral Sir James Douglas), Commander-in-Chief at the Leeward Islands, in command of four ships of the line and two frigates.

This view shows the transport of the second group of troops in the small boats behind the ships of the line which are returning the fire from the French batteries. The first group of disembarked troops can be seen in a red column making its way through the town of Roseau and up the hill towards the French batteries. The French command post can be seen on the top of the hill, to the left of the smoke from the batteries. The British captured the island after two days' fighting.
