Sketch of encampment at Brackwede, 1757 (Brackwede, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) 51°59'00"N 08°31'00"E

c.1757

Pencil, pen and ink on paper | Scale: not stated | RCIN 732004.a

A sketch of the encampment of the Hessian and Hanoverian grenadiers at Ellerbrockshoff (between Brackwede and Bielefeld), 1757. Seven Years War (1756-63). Oriented with south to top.

G.J. du Plat's plan of the camp at Brackwede on 11 June 1757 (RCIN 732201.l) shows Hessian Grenadiers encamped some distance from the main body of the army, similar to this sketch; this sketch may have been part of the compilation material for that encampment plan. Although this is a rough sketch, the important features of the landscape are distinguished; woods, cultivated land, rough pasture and marsh or perhaps scrubland; a bridge is shown over a stream, and two depots of hay and straw, one small (Kleine Heu und Stroh Magazin) and one large (Grosses Heu und Stroh Magazin).

The name of the little settlement of Ellerbrockshoff is preserved today in a road name in the southern suburbs of Bielefeld: 'Am Ellerbrocks Hof', running east off the Artur Ladebeck Straße.
