A high oblique view of the fortress town of Hanau which had been occupied by the Swedes, commanded latterly by the Scottish General James Ramsay, since 1631. In February 1638, Major Johann Winter von Güdenborn of the Hanau army, together with the Wetterau Association of Imperial Courts, staged a coup and drove the Swedes out of the city, as depicted in this view (see Alexia Grosjean, Alexander Leslie and the Scottish Generals of the Thiry Years' War, 1618-1648, Abingdon, 2015, pp.88-9). Thirty Years War (1618-1648).

The topographical details of this view/map are closely similar to Merian's view of the siege of Hanau in 1636, which appeared between pp.590 and 591 of vol.III of the Theatrum Europaeum (1639).
