Thirty Years War (1618-48)

Maps, prints and letterpress text covering the major battles and sieges of the war

? MELCHIOR TAVERNIER (1594-1665)

View of the siege of Leucate, 1637 (Leucate, Languedoc-Roussillon, France) 42°54ʹ38ʺN 03°01ʹ46ʺE

1637 or later

Etching and engraving; printed on paper; mounted on paper (Mount Type B); gilt edges, left and bottom | 39.9 x 53.1 cm (image, neatline and sheet) | RCIN 722117

A high oblique view of the Spanish siege of French-held Leucate, between 27 August and 29 September 1637, culminating in the Battle of Leucate, fought on 28 September 1637 between the French Royal army, commanded by Charles de Schomberg, duc de Halluin (16 February 1601-6 June 1656), Governor of Languedoc, and the Spanish, commanded by Gerardo de Cervellón, resulting in a French victory. Thirty Years War (1618-1648). Oriented with south-east to top (cardinal points).

The explanatory text, or key to the letters on this view, does not exist in the Royal Collection. A loose copy, on a slightly reduced scale, lacking any lettering, follows p.63 of the third part of Les Triomphes de Louis le Juste, XIII (1649).

Leucate Fortress no longer exists but its site, in relation to Leucate, is illustrated on the cover of Claude Guillemot's Le château fantôme, vie et mort de la forteresse de Leucate, Editions L'An Demain (2014).

See also RCIN 722039.f which is one of an untitled volume of fifteen prints and maps of the campaigns of Louis XIII between 1629 and 1640. See for 722039.
