PLAN DEPVIS / LE FORT LILLO JVSQVES A / VN QVART DE LIEVE AVDEssous / D’ANVERS. 1748

1748

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: 1:79,300 approx. | RCIN 731003

A map of Antwerp and environs with the forts on each side of the River Scheldt, and the French fleet, February 1748. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north to top.

The cartographer appears to have shown the coastline as it appears at low tide, with mudflats being represented by a red wash with black stippling. An old fortified line to the north-east of Antwerp is annotated to indicate that it has been repaired. Small settlements to the north are annotated with the names of the French regiments and the number of troops billetted there.
