? GEORGE AUGUSTUS SCHULTZ (ACTIVE 1734-49)

Battle of Dettingen, 1743

1743 or later

Pencil, pen and ink on paper; laid down on linen | 19.4 x 35.1 cm (image and sheet) | RCIN 728097

A rough sketch of the camps and movements of the Allied and French armies before, during and after the Battle of Dettingen, 17-27 June 1743. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north-east to top. The attribution to Schultz is made on stylistic grounds.

The Battle of Dettingen, in which the British defeated the French, was the last in which a British Monarch (George II, 1683-1760) took part, and the first in which William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, the King's third son, saw active service. Cumberland received a serious wound in the calf which was to trouble him for the rest of his life: a shot had left a hole ‘as big as a hen's egg and the extremities of some of the muscle which it had torn asunder in its passage were quite drove out of the wound’.

It is possible that this sketch formed the basis for the plan of the battle which Schultz drew on the map of the marches to and from Dettingen which is at RCIN 728103.

The map covers the banks of the Main from Seligenstadt (50°02'35"N 08°58'26"E) in the north-west to Nalkeim (Nilkheim 49°56'51"N 09°05'58"E) in the south-east.
