A map of the camps and movements of the British and French armies before, during, and after the Battle of Dettingen, 19-27 June 1743. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with south-west to top.

The Battle of Dettingen, in which the British defeated the French, was the last in which a British Monarch (George II, 1683-1760) took part, and the first in which William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, the King's third son, saw active service. Cumberland received a serious wound in the calf which was to trouble him for the rest of his life: a shot had left a hole ‘as big as a hen's egg and the extremities of some of the muscle which it had torn asunder in its passage were quite drove out of the wound’.

The map covers the banks of the Main from Gross Klotzen (Großkrotzenburg 50°05'00"N 08°59'00"E) in the north-west to Oberau (49°56'13"N 09°07'54"E) in the south-east. March routes are shown.
