References to the map of the Battle of Fontenoy by James Gaffney. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48).

An explanatory key, 1-25, to the numbers on the map at RCIN 729101.a, which show the positions of the various named brigades of the French army, and the general positions of the Allied army.

Gaffney is an Irish name and there were present in the French Army at Fontenoy six Irish Brigades to one of which it is possible that James Gaffney belonged.

The map and this explanatory text were formerly kept in a buff-coloured rag paper folder on the recto of which is the old heading and a modern note in black pencil: (a-b) CMB Nov '86 [i.e. 1986].

Condition: four fold lines; untidily trimmed.
