    A map of the town and fortifications of Dunkirk and the French encampments in 1742. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748). Oriented with east top top.

    A detailed topographical map showing the locations and strengths of the batteries, the considerable extent of the destruction of fortifications and the part of the town which had been demolished, together with the positions of French encampments. There appears to be no explanation for the letters O-R which mark two sections across the main fortified lines.

    Condition: eight fold lines; formerly folded to 16.0 x 13.8 cm; brown stains; surface dirt along bottom edge. Verso: heavily stained brown; heavy surface dirt along top edge, consistent with having been rolled and tied; several old tears repaired with paper on verso before being laid down on coarse linen.
