Includes much of the mapping collected by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, as Captain General of the British army

GEORGE AUGUSTUS SCHULTZ (ACTIVE 1734-49)

Encampment at Ath, 1745

c.1745

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on thin paper | Scale: 1:22,200 approx. | RCIN 729111

A rough sketch of the encampment of the Allied army at Ath, 12-16 May 1745. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north-west to top (cardinal points).

This sketch is executed mainly in pencil with red colouring applied to the British brigades and the Highlanders.

After their defeat at Fontenoy, and having been on the move from 2 am on 11 May, then having fought a battle, the exhausted troops of the Allied army retreated to Ath, a march of about 24 km (15 miles). The encampment is shown on the west side of the River Dendre, extending for a distance of about 6 km (3.7 miles) from Herbaix (Rebaix 50°39'35"N 03°46'59"E) in the north, passing southwards between Villers-Saint-Amand (50°37'21"N 03°43'53E) and Ath, to just north of Maffle (50°37'04"N 03°48'11"E).
