Encampment at Borgloon, 1746

Le Camp de l’Armee Alliée aupres / de Borglohn depuis le 27: jusqu’au 29: Juillet / 1746

1746 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: not stated. 1:43,500 approx. | RCIN 730056

A map of the encampment of the Allied army under the command of Prince Charles of Lorraine at Borgloon, 27-29 July 1746. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48).

In the same hand as RCIN 730055. This plan has a curious planimetric arrangement, as if it has been drawn from a panoramic view taking in about 190° of the country around Borgloon. Thus the villages: Vellen (Wellen 50°50°27"N 05°20°19"E), Operdingen (Hoepertingen 50°48°43"N 05°17°03"E), Rocklingen (Rijkel 50°48°33"N 05°15°40"E), Kettighofen (Kuttekoven 50°48°33"N 05°19°33"E), Gelmen (50°46°15"N 05°16°33"E), Bommeshoffen (Bommershoven 50°47°14"N 05°22°44"E), do not appear in the right positional relationship to each other on the map. The campsite extended from Wellen in the north, around the south of Borgloon, then to the east and north by way of Bommershoven, a distance of about 14 km.
The encamped troops are represented en bloc without any identification of regiment or nationality.
