Encampment at Hocht, 1747

PLAN of the ENCAMPMENT of the BRITISH at HOIGHTEN 1747

c.1747

Pencil, pen, brown and black ink and watercolour on paper; some pricking through | Scale: 1:14,300 approx. | RCIN 730180.a

A map of encampment of the British army at Hoighten, 1747. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north-north-west to top (compass rose).

The present-day topography in this area has been changed considerably by the canalisation of the Maas, but the identification of 'Hoighten' with Hocht country house seems secure given its position in relation to Peterson Church (identified with Domein Pietersheim at grid reference 871421 on sheet 34 of 1:50,000 series M737 ed.1 1995) and Lonaken (i.e. Lanaken).

The encamped regiments are: First Line: Scots Greys, Rothes (John Leslie, 10th Earl of Rothes KT), Howard, Dejean (Louis or Lewis Dejean, 37th Foot), Crawford (John Lindsay, 20th Earl of Crawford, 25th Foot), Johnson (Lt Gen John Johnson, 33rd Foot), Campbell, Cope, Rich. Second Line: Pultney (General the Hon. Harry Pulteney, 13th Foot), Conway (Field Marshal the Hon. Henry Seymour Conway, 48th Foot), Artillery, Douglas, Fleming (Major-General James Fleming, 36th Foot), Huske (General John Huske, 23rd Foot).

Condition: flat, no fold lines.

One of a set of seven plans of encampments together with an order of battle by Daniel Paterson; all stitched together along the left edge (see RCINs 730180.a-h).
