A plan of the encampment of the Allied army at Moulbaix, 7-9 May 1745. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north-north-west (cardinal points) to top.
This map accompanies the rough sketch at RCIN 729084.b. Both were pasted to the inside of a paper folder when they formed part of Cumberland's collection. The attribution to Schultz is based on the entry in the George III catalogue and on stylistic grounds.
The camp at Moulbaix was about 10 km (6.2 miles) west-north-west of the camp at Cambron. The movement westwards of the Allied army was in response to an earlier feint by Maurice of Saxony which led the Allies to believe that his main attack was centred on Mons, when, in fact, his intention was to besiege Tournai further west. The Allied army was now moving west to meet the French at what would be the Battle of Fontenoy on 11 May.
The encampment extended for a distance of about 5 km (3.1 miles) along the east side of the Secours de la Dendre, a tributary of the River Dendre, from Ellignies (Elignies-Saint-Anne 50°33'42"N 03°40'21"E), to the east of Aubegies (Aubechies 50°34'27"N 03°40'35"E) and Bliques (Blicquy 50°35'17"N 03°41'08"E) to Chapelle (Chapelle-à-Oie 50°35'45"N 03°40'18"E) in the north, where a squadron group of three horse and six dragoons was camped west of the river.
The colouring of the regimental rectangles has not been completed; the red colouring denotes British troops (see the red rectangle labelled 'Art: Angl:'), and the yellow represents Hanoverians (see the yellow rectangle labelled 'Art: Hanov:').
