War of the Austrian Succession (1740-8)

Includes much of the mapping collected by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, as Captain General of the British army

GEORGE AUGUSTUS SCHULTZ (ACTIVE 1734-49)

Encampment near Berleghem, 1744

1744 or later

Pencil, pen and ink on paper | Scale: not stated. 1:17,300 approx. | RCIN 729024

A sketch from a field survey of the British encampment between Berleghem and Gavere, 22 June to 31 July 1744. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with east to top.

Lines of observation are drawn from the corner of a regimental rectangle representing a squadron of horse [it is larger than those representing infantry regiments], possibly Honywood's. Sir Philip Honywood K.B. was Colonel the 1st King's Dragoon Guards from 18 April 1743 to 8 July 1752 (Leslie 1974, p.8). The layout of the regimental rectangles, when compared with other maps of the encampment of the Allied army, indicate that this sketch covers the disposition of the British troops. The face of the map is covered with numbered squares which would have been used for copying the detail to another sheet. A larger pencilled rectangle may indicate the sheetlines of the finished map.
