A map of encampment of the Dutch army near Waalwijk and Loon op Zand, 1748. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with south-south-east to top (compass rose).
Waalwijk is about 12 km (7.4 miles) west of 's-Hertogenbosch (51°41'57"N 05°18'15"E). The Dutch army in this encampment included troops from Hesse, Bavaria, Würtzburg, Hesse-Cassel, Saxe-Gotha, Wolfenbüttel, Hesse-Darmstadt, and Scotland. Drawn in a continental hand. Enclosed, cultivated ground is distinguished from open moorland; roads are coloured sepia and given direction annotations: ‘à Breda’, ‘de Capelle à Tilburg’, ‘de Heusden’, ‘de Bois le Duc’. The encampments are situated on the moorland, surrounded by cultivated land which would provide foraging, and extend across about 4 km.
