The attribution to Schultz is made on stylistic grounds. This is a low oblique view taken from the east bank of the Rhine looking south-east towards Mainz. A pontoon bridge has been constructed across the river, linking the banks with an intervening island, Petersaue (not named on the view), across which baggage wagons, cavalry and infantry are crossing. The date ‘23. Aug.st’ is written against the bridge. The eastern end of the Rettbergsaue island (not named on the view) can be seen to the right of the view. The date ‘22.d Octob.r’ is written against a couple of small boats in the immediate foreground; this may be the date of the execution of the drawing. The arrow in the river cannot be indicating the direction of flow but, the opposite, for the view is looking upstream.
Condition: no fold lines. Verso: brown discolouration.
