Map of encampment at Bouwel, 1747 (Bouwel, Flanders, Belgium) 51°10'22"N 04°44'30"E

c.1747

Pencil and watercolour on five pieces of paper, joined; some pricking through | Scale: not stated. 1:26,100 approx. | RCIN 730119

A map of the encampment of the Allied army at Bouwel, 29 May-16 June 1747. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north to top.

The attribution to Schultz is made on stylistic grounds. This sketch is based on the printed maps of Fricx with further information added from field survey; a preliminary sketch is at RCIN 730118. Some places are named: the distinctive outlines of Nazareth, for example, (east of Nazaret 51°08'25"N 04°34'25"E, now a northern suburb of Lier) can be seen on the ground today as a heavily wooded enclosure. The troops are coloured according to nationality: British (red), Hanoverian (yellow), Austrian (green), Dutch (orange), Hessian (blue). No regiments are named. Heathland is indicated by the writing of the word bruyere to several areas on the map.

Condition: several fold lines; induced discolouration along paper joins; diagonally cropped at bottom left and bottom right corners; some foxing.
