Includes much of the mapping collected by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, as Captain General of the British army

ANONYMOUS

Map of encampment at Grammont, 1745 (Geraardsbergen, Flanders, Belgium) 50°46'49"N 03°54'25"E

1745 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper; laid down on linen | Scale: 1:29,200 approx. | RCIN 729126

A plan of the encampment of the Allied army between Lessines and Grammont, 1 July 1745. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north to top (cardinal points).

This map shows the first encampment of the Allied army at Grammont, before it crossed the Dendre and moved to the north. The date for this part of the encampment is not quite consistent with that given in RCIN 729125 as it indicates that this part of the camp existed between 30 June and 1 July. Individual battalions and squadrons are shown, grouped in brigades, but not identified. By reference to RCIN 729125, the two groups of three battalions and three squadrons to the north-west of Overboelare (50°45'49"N 03°51'49"E) are the English guards for Cumberland's headquarters.
