? NEVIL TATTON (ACTIVE 1744-75)

Map of encampment at Halle, 1745 (Halle, Flanders, Belgium) 50°44'01"N 04°14'04"E

1745 or later

Pen, ink and watercolour on thin tracing paper, laid down on paper | Scale: 1:36,600 approx. | RCIN 729078

A map of the encampment of the Allied army, under the command of the Duke of Cumberland, at Halle, 30 April 1745. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with south-west to top (cardinal points).

This appears to be an ink draft of the finished copy at RCIN 729077. Some of the regiments are coloured according to nationality [British in red, Hanoverian in yellow, Austrian in green and the Dutch uncoloured] but there is no key or annotation to identify the nations, nor are the regiments named. According to the symbols, it appears that there were 63 squadrons of horse, 3 squadrons of dragoons, 37 infantry battalions and artillery.

The encampment extended for a distance of about 3 km (1.8 miles) from north of Halle in the north, through Lembeek (50°42'56"N 04°13'05"E) to Tubise (Tubize 50°41'26"N 04°12'03"E) in the south.

Condition: no fold lines.
