War of the Austrian Succession (1740-8)

Includes much of the mapping collected by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, as Captain General of the British army

JOHANN CARL TREU (ACTIVE 1744-6)

Map of encampment at Müllekoven, 1745 (Müllekoven, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) 50°47'00"N 07°06'00"E

1745 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: 1:19,800 approx. | RCIN 729076.c

A map of the encampment of the Allied army (Austrian, Hanoverian and Dutch) under the command of Duke d'Arenberg, at Müllekoven, 25 May 1745. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with south-east to top (cardinal points with magnetic north).

Müllekoven is about 41 km (25.5 miles) north of the camp at Feldkirchen (see RCIN 729076.b). The encampment, in present-day North Rhine-Westphalia, extends from Sieglar (50°48'00"N 07°08'00"E) in the north-east to Mondrup (Mondorf 50°47'00"N 07°04'00"E).

The colours used for the encamped regiments are probably the Austrians in green, Hanoverian in red, and Dutch in yellow.

The three items at RCINs 729076.a-c were formerly housed in a buff rag paper folder which had the old heading on the front: 'Encampments of Feldt-kirchen and Mulickhoven and Journal of the operations of the Allied Army from the 29.th April to the 31.st May 1745'. An ink inscription: 'No.s 418-420' refers to the numbers stamped in black on the items; the black pencil inscription '(a-c) CMB Nov'86' [i.e. 1986] is written below the old heading in a modern hand.
