A map of the encampments of the Allied army under the command of the Duke of Cumberland at Hellenrouck, April 1748. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north-west to top (cardinal points).

Encamped regiments are named. The bridgehead across the Meuse is shown but the pontoon bridges are lacking. The floodplain of the River Meuse is represented by a dark greenish-brown wash over which there is stippling in a series of short line; care has been taken to indicate which areas are especially marshy, and the slope of the river terrace, denoting the former level of the river, is indicated by hachuring. Cultivated land is shown by the stylised symbol of rectangles of brown stripes at different angles; heathland or rough pasture is similarly represented to the floodplain, but in a lighter colour.

Additional text: [bottom right, below title, a key to the colours which distinguish the Austrian, Hanoverian and British troops and to the location of the bridgehead over the Meuse which was begun on 14 April:] Explication.
