War of the Austrian Succession (1740-8)

Includes much of the mapping collected by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, as Captain General of the British army

? GEORGE AUGUSTUS SCHULTZ (ACTIVE 1734-49)

Map of encampment at Zonhoven, 1747 (Zonhoven, Flanders, Belgium) 50°59'26"N 05°22'05"E

c.1747

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on two pieces of paper, joined | Scale: not stated. 1:17,800 approx. | RCIN 730125

A map of the encampment of the Allied army at Zonhoven, 1747. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with south to top. The attribution to Schultz is made on the basis of the old catalogue entry, supported by stylistic characteristics. A rough sketch, not to scale and probably paced, with distances between various features, perhaps in paces, written on the map against them. It is possible that the letters ‘f’ and ‘p’ which are written in several places are annotations on land use: ‘f’ may stand for ‘Feldt’ or field, while ‘p’ may represent ‘pflügbar’ or arable. The old heading is written to the top of the map, above Hasselt (50°55'51"N 05°20'16"E). Condition: seven fold lines; formerly folded to 9.3 x 10.3 cm; worn along fold lines; surface dirt on verso; small tear to left edge and to top edge.
