Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: 1:42,200 approx. | RCIN 730059

A map of the encampments of the French and Allied armies north of Namur in August 1746. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north-west to top (compass rose).

In 1746 the Allied army, under the command of Prince Charles, Duke of Lorraine, spent the summer months manoeuvring and camping in the area north and east of Brussels. The topographical information on this map is detailed and is likely to have been supplied on the basis of a field survey amplification of a published map. The map covers the same area as the western half of RCIN 730058. It extends from Spy (50°28'53"N 04°42'34"E) in the west to Dhuy (50°33'33"N 04°51'33"E) in the east, and from Gimblours (Gembloux 50°33'41"N 04°41'56"E) in the north to Suarle (Suarlée 50°28'52"N 04°46'45"E) in the south.
