A map of the encampments, manoeuvres and battles between Liège and Maastricht between the French and Allied armies in 1746 and 1747. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with west-north-west to top.

This complex graphic shows, by use of colour, a combination of campsite, manoeuvres and battles for the years 1746 and 1747 in an area stretching for a distance of about 26 km between Liège and Maastricht. The Allied army, under the command of Prince Charles Duke of Lorraine (Governor of the Austrian Netherlands) spent the months of July to October 1746 in manoeuvring and camping in the area to the east and north of Brussels, and the camps at Bombaye, Lanaken, and Rosmeer are shown on this map.

Superimposed on the old camp outlines is the formation of the opposing armies at the Battle of Raucoux (11 October 1746) in which the French, under the command of Marshal Saxe, defeated the Allied army. The camps in 1747 in the vicinity of Maastricht are also shown, together with the Battle of Laffeldt. The camps from 1746 are shown by a uniform grey colour, while those of 1747 are depicted in different colours reflecting the country of origin of the troops: Imperial (Austrian) in green, English in red, Hanoverians in vermilion, Hessians in sky blue, and the Dutch in dark blue. The colour red was used for the English, Hanoverian and Hessians in the depiction of the two battles.
