Map of French lines near Germersheim, 1743 (Germersheim, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany) 49°13'23"N 08°21'50"E

c.1743

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: not stated | RCIN 728129

A plan of the destruction by the Allied army of the French fortified lines around Germersheim, 3 October 1743. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with south-west to top.

The French had abandoned their fortified lines at Germersheim on 27 September. This map shows that the land immediately north of Germersheim, depicted as marshland on Schultz's map at RCIN 728128, had been flooded. The topographical details of this map are different to Schultz's map. There is no key to the map; the yellow colour which is applied to the lines, and which is normally used to indicate projected constructions, may indicate here those areas which were destroyed.

Condition: five fold lines; formerly folded to 10.6 x 16.2 cm; brown discolouration. Verso: brown discolouration; surface dirt along fold lines.
